According to Audemars Piguet, the Royal Oak 4100 was introduced in 1977 and designed by Jacqueline Dimier. It is recorded in the archives as the Royal Oak III, following the 5402 and 8638 models.
The 4100 was the first Royal Oak with a central seconds hand, it was created to attract clients who found the 39mm 5402 too large. With a 35mm diameter, the 4100 established a new benchmark and was available from launch in steel, yellow gold, and two-tone versions.
