This IWC Ingenieur Perpetual Calendar Ref. IW3540 was launched in 1987 under the helm of Günter Blümlein, IWC's CEO at the time. Head watchmaker Kurt Klaus developed a new type of mechanically programmed perpetual calendar module was conceived with just 82 components. It was fitted on an ETA 2892A2. For the first time in a perpetual calendar, all adjustments – from the four-digit year to the moon phase – could be handled via the three o'clock screw-down crown. IWC added in something called the "century slide" which advances once every hundred years. It remained in production until the early 2000's with its hinge lugs and screw down crown remains an iconic design of IWC from the 1980's.
