DIAL: Green lacquer "Stella" dial with applied gold markers, tritium lume plots with gold tritium lume hands. Date aperture at 3 o’clock and Day aperture at 12 o’clock.

CASE: 36mm, yellow gold with ‘fluted’ bezel and sapphire glass with loupe for date at 3 o’clock.

MOVEMENT: Caliber 3055, Single Quick, Self-winding chronometer movement, 27 jewels

BRACELET: Leather strap with gold plated Rolex buckle

CONDITION REPORT: Dial is flawless without any cracks or hairlines and all lume plots intact and beautifully aged to nice pumpkin patina. The lume in the hands is original and slightly lighter than the dial plots, typical of this generation watch. The case is strong, without major scratches or dings. Stunning and mint overall example.

NOTES: The word ‘Stella’ comes from Latin/Italian for star. The shiny and colorful lacquer dials were nicknamed Stella dials not only for their aesthetics, but it is believed these dials were originally made by a supplier called Stella SA for Rolex and the nickname was born from this origin. Due to their lack of commercial success at the time, very few were produced and the production run was quite limited for each color and reference.

The Day Date ‘President’ is one of the most iconic Rolexes and has a truly rich history. Introduced in the mid 1950’s, the Day Date quickly became popular and a symbol of success. It become even more famous in the 1960’s and known as the ‘President’s wristwatch’ following an ad campaign in the United States by Rolex as well as rumors that this was the wristwatch of choice for American presidents such as Roosevelt. We have seen that it was the choice of gift from Marilyn to Kennedy, with an inscription on the case back and we have often seen it in photos of Lyndon Johnson. The size of 36mm in diameter, the shape of the Oyster case and the cyclops that magnifies the date window by 2.5 times are the hallmarks of Rolex models. The Day Date is still the king of vintage watches as it offers a story, a reliable automatic movement and both the day and date.
