According to the Omega Museum, the present watch was produced on March 17, 1997 and delivered to The Netherlands.

The first sapphire display caseback Speedmaster was launched in 1980 by Omega in 18K gold and was the first of its kind to be offered in series. This BA/BC 348.0802 featured the finely decorated 861L visible from the back of the watch. Subsequently, in 1985, Omega launched the 345.0808 in stainless steel with a decorated copper color movement, caliber 863. Following that first series in steel, the color of the movement was changed to yellow and once the base caliber was upgraded from 861 to 1861 (1863 for display back) in 1997, the movement because silver/rhodium color. These series were made in much smaller quantities than the standard moonwatch with commemorative caseback and are highly prized today.
